Friend of mine wants to do video editing, but he only has an old G3. He likes the videos that I've been creating with my G4 733 DA using Final Cut Express, v.3., and wants to know whether it would be better to ditch his G3 and go looking for something newer, or try to upgrade it. I asked him what G3 he had, and he gave me the following specs:

Ditch and upgrade.

Nothing is more frustrating and counterproductive, be it building a book case or editing a movie, than learning a new craft with inadequate and balky tools, and editing movies on his getup will be like building a house with tools you got from the 99 Cent store.

A decent G4 with enough ram to run OS X and a fast enough processor so that he's not waiting forever is a good thing.

It would be cheaper and far easier for the novice to use iMovie; iLife 4 packages are really cheap, and even iLife 5 isn't expensive.

Thanks much for the advice and info Len, Dylan, and Bruce. I'll let my friend know that he needs a minimum of a G4 with AGP to do video work. Someone here recently reported scoring a G4 just like my DA 733 for $300 on eBay, and I'll suggest that friend go there to look for something similar. And I agree that iMovie would be the best way for him to get his feet wet in video editing. I made many a video myself in iMovie before outgrowing it and moving up to Final Cut Express. FCE has a steep learning curve that can drive you bonkers until you persevere and get the hang of it, although once you do you'd never think of going back to iMovie. I'll suggest he get iLife, which will not only give him iMovie but iPhoto, iTunes, Garage Band, etc.

Again, both of us appreciate the kind help.

Tom
