Second, in OSX 10.2.8, the default setting for the connect menu
appears to be the Printer Port. Is there some way to set the default
to be the Modem Port (which would make more sense anyway!). As
things stand, I can't just pull down the menu and click "Connect"
because I must first pull down the menu and change it from "Printer"
 to "Modem".

Thank you for any helpful or humorous suggestions.

But I do know that you can eliminate the printer port connection from
your Internet Connect menu by going to the "Network" System Preferences
box, under the "Network Port Configurations" box. You can check or
uncheck them, & then they won't appear in the menu bar, or, if you have
to have a Printer Port connection for something, you can rename them by
cicking on the name -- just make your Modem Port connection the 1st in
alphabetical order.

Thank you, Bill and Chuck. I figured there was some way to change that, but being new to OSX (I never installed it until I needed it for the Sound Bridge) I just don't know where the settings are the way I do in Classic.

And RA thanks for the chuckle. Beige G3s are down to $30 at Goodwill Computerworks, but I think I'll hold off on the hammer for now.

Maybe I'll do my importing while booted into Classic and running iTunes 2.04 and then just import the resulting files into 4.7 the next time I boot into OSX. It'll be a bit of a pain, but better than having the "assembly line" of CD importing constantly interrupted.

(Still mad that Apple dumped LocalTalk networking in X -- now I'll have
to get a router or hub, & some kind of bridge to use my HP LaserJet 4
ML...) :[

Does the LJ4 ML have the MIO slot? If so you can usually find the HP Ethernet card for the MIO slot pretty cheaply. In fact, there's a version of the MIO card with 10baseT and LocalTalk on the same card.

I've been using a MicroAsantePrint which is the predecessor to the AsanteTalk for several years now to put the TI MicroLaser+ and LocalTalk IWII on our home network. I think I saw some of the AsanteTalks at SmallDog for a low price. They may have been missing the power supply though.
