Hi, folks,
A colleague of mine -- unfortunately on the other side of the country
-- has a Mac that's not working properly.
I know it's one of the blue-and-white towers, but I'm afraid I don't
know if it's a G3 or G4. Why don't I know this? Because, right now,
it's not starting.
I do know that it's under-memoried. He uses it for ProTools (v. 4, I
think), with OS 9.x.
We work over the phone while he speaks radio scripts into it.
Unfortunately, it won't start up right now.
And this turns out to be an OLD problem. He often starts the computer,
but without much of anything happening. Yes, the light on the computer
turns on, but that DING never happens; the system startup doesn't kick
in.
He often turns it off and on for hours, and it will finally turn on.
Then he uses it. And it may work just fine for several start-ups, and
then go flaky again.
What's the problem?
I was wondering if it might be the PRAM battery. Should he replace it?
I couldn't get him to zap PRAM or rebuild desktop, since it wouldn't
get that far.
I had him unseat and reseat both the hard drive and the ONE stick of
RAM.
Any other ideas?
timo
