I know it's one of the blue-and-white towers, but I'm afraid I don't know if it's a G3 or G4. Why don't I know this? Because, right now, it's not starting.

I do know that it's under-memoried. He uses it for ProTools (v. 4, I think), with OS 9.x.

We work over the phone while he speaks radio scripts into it. Unfortunately, it won't start up right now.

And this turns out to be an OLD problem. He often starts the computer, but without much of anything happening. Yes, the light on the computer turns on, but that DING never happens; the system startup doesn't kick in.

He often turns it off and on for hours, and it will finally turn on. Then he uses it. And it may work just fine for several start-ups, and then go flaky again.

What's the problem?

Sounds like the power supply.
