Each IDE drive comes with a set of pins that identify it as Master,
Slave, Single, or - on newer drives - Cable Select. Cable Select lets
the computer communicate with the drive to automatically set itself to
Master or Slave status. The G4 towers are capable of Cable Select, but
most older machines will not work correctly if the drive is set to
Cable Select. If you're installing a drive in a Performa, and it isn't
recognized by the Drive Setup utility, then most likely the Cable
Select jumper is set.

I recently bought a dual-bay Firewire external enclosure (Oxford 911 ATA-133). Both drives had to be set to Cable Select before they would be recognized by the computer (G4/533DA running 10.3.9).
