Wow, Jeff! This is such terrific info! It's more than I can digest, really,
in one sitting. I'm printing it, both for general reference and so I can
better visualize the grid you made.

I did indeed get a failure on each of the four new DIMMs. I did wonder if it
had to do with one or more of the sockets, and I may eventually have both
the means and good reason to test that, but not right now. I think I
mentioned that I started out with two DIMMs--before buying the 4 new
ones--the 64M stick that originally shipped with the G3 (or so I assume,
since I bought it used), and a 256M Kingston that the previous owner had
added. When I got the machine these two were seated in the first and last
slots, respectively. After a couple of random combinations of the 64M stick
and two new ones, I figured out that the Kingston at least had a track
record, and used those my original configuration to sandwich the new DIMMs.

After the four new ones all failed last night, I set it back up with just
the 64M and the Kingston in the end slots and let it run overnight. It was
still running when I checked it this morning, on something like run 5400. As
you say, that doesn't actually prove anything--neither chip was entirely
available for testing--but it did make me feel a little better. (Though it
doesn't say anything about those middle sockets...hmmm, maybe I could test
those sockets by running that same test with the Kingston moved into one of
them and then the other?)

Anyway, I'm going to order some of that $30 RAM from OWC that Nancy
mentioned. I think I'll get a full GB, as I can use any leftover DIMMs in
any of three PCs (I, my husband, and my parents all have old Windows boxes
that use the same DIMM). It's also a hedge against any bad sticks in the
batch. At that point, I'll reread your excellently explicit advice, figure
out a testing plan, and follow it closely. If I'm lucky, I'll identify a
good stick or two right off, ruling out bad sockets and CPU problems in the
process, and proceed from there. If I'm real lucky, they'll all check out,
and I'll install the four OWC DIMMs in the G3 (on the assumption that
they'll run together better, if only slightly) and pass the other two on to
another machine. If I'm unlucky, I'll follow the plan through failure after
failure until I'm so frustrated that I have to come back and ask for further
advice.

And, of course, in the meantime, there are a half dozen other subjects I
will definitely be asking advice on....

Thanks a million!
Joy
