There has been ONE "major rewrite" of OS X, which was 10.1 > 10.2 The other releases have been far from rewrites, but feature and performance upgrades, like 8.0 > 8.5 > 9.0.

This is utter BS. I know of NO CPU upgrade (of a supported system) that's incompatible with OS X.
