If you're trying to email it through yahoo, i think
the limit is still 10MB for total attachments. Has it
gone up, i don't know. However, any JPEG file you send
over 1MB will cause you to lose friends. They're
unneedlessly big.
Launch you file in Photoshop, go up into Image and
choose "Image Size"
Leave the "Constrain Proportions" AND "Resample Image"
CHECKED.
Under your "Pixel Dimension", if the width is greater
than 1024, go and change it to 1024. If it's less,
leave it. Unless your friends have huge 30inch
screens, 800 is still the norm for width. Less is even
better. 640 pixels in width was the old norm. 800 is
optimal for a decent sized image.
Before you hit OK, you'll see numbers above telling
you how big the file is compared to it's original
size.
Once you get the pixel size down to something
reasonable for on-screen viewing, hit OK.
------------
at this point, you can do a "Save As" and choose JPEG
format. Set to Standard baseline, and quality of 8 or
10 will do. The lower the number, the more compression
and lesser image quality.
Check your JPEG image size and be amazed and at much
smaller it was from the Photoshop file.
BTW, if you're friends are using modem lines, try and
shoot for no more than 250kb in total JPEG file size.
Smaller is better. Bigger and it's a bear to download.
If they have DSL, give'm hell.
BTW #2, if you're photo looks blurrier after you've
made it small, go to Filter > Sharpern > Unsharp Mask.
Tinker around with the settings. Try 100%, 0.5 Radius,
and Threshold of 3.
BTW #3. to get even more file reduction, change your
file color setting from CMYK to RGB. Go to Image >
Mode. If it's RGB, leave it alone. If your buddies are
color blind, change it to Grayscale and you'll get
even smaller file sizes.
Always make a duplicate before you attempt any file
reduction, etc. Good luck
-------------
Now, if you're PICKY, go back to Image --> Image Size.
Now, uncheck the "Resample Image" if... and only if,
your Resolution under "Document Size" is anything
other than 96 or 72 pixels/INCH.
Once "resample image" is uncheck, type in 96 if you're
on a PC or 72 if you're on a Mac.
