   After switching drives many times on my Beige G3
Desktop the drives would mount intermitantly. On the
off chance the original 40 wire IDE cables were
damaged I replaced both with 80 wire IDE cables (being
frugal I would have been happy with 40 wire cables but
none were available) and it completely solved my
problem.

So I doubt it's the cables.

got them from Tiger Direct for $2.99@ so PC-Mac
compatibility isn't an issue here.
