They are platform independent. However, Apple's airport extreme card only takes Broadcom's 802.11G chip. So, if you want to use a card that's compatible, you need to get one that uses a Broadcom chip - you can check the card manufacturer on Broadcom website.

If you use a card that don't use the Broadcom chip, you will need to get a driver, and Orangeware is one of the companies that provides drivers for the non-Broadcom chip. I put a D-Link 802.11G PCI card into my Yikes! and it recognized it in OSX right away. However, I believe D-Link has been using different vendors lately - so, if you got one of those that advertise 108Mbps instead of the noraml 56 Mbps, you got a card that uses the non-Broadcom chip and will need to get the Orangeware driver for it.
