Slightly O/T, but I had to reply.

Many businesses today exist only to make a large
(read:obscene oil company)profit. Their shareholders
demand it. There is nothing wrong with that IF you
state just that as your motive for existence.
Unfortunately, many businesses go to great lengths to
convince us that they "care" about our welfare and
those things that are important to us (charities,
environment, quality of life, etc). Therefore:

Many people feel that these companies are "good
corporate citizens". Their advertising campaigns have
told us they are in some cases. We think we are
"entitled" to reap a reward from our investment in
their company (purchase of their product or service).
It can be beneficial for their bottom line when we
believe they are.

My .02 cents.
