James,
Thanks for asking.
I am originally from the SF Bay area. Transplanted here in July 1996.
Here they say there are 2 options for DSL. 256K and 1.5 MB. However,
when I requested the 1.5, I was reassured that is what I had. Then a
day or two later I called again and was told, 1.5 is not available
here. So my DSL only goes up to 256K. I keep calling them every month
or so to get 1.5. Hasn't worked yet. After I complained, they added,
..."up to 1.5 in some areas".
I have 2 computers, and a video phone connected to a router and the DSL
modem on the 265K. I have to unplug the videophone from the router, or
the internet is real slow. More like dial up. Apparently the video
phone is greedy whether or not it is turned on. So I unplug it,
especially if I want to use iSight and iChat. Fortunately we do not
yet use the video phone much. I would like not to have to do that, but
I guess whatever works at the moment.
They just keep telling me the modem is working just fine. I pay
monthly. No contract. But as far as I know, they do not offer anything
like that. Cable is high $ and the video phone picture is not as good
and clean as DSL. So we are hanging in there and hoping.

I live in the burs of Des Moines, Iowa. No mountains here to block

I'm curious: what do you mean the "higher 1.5 DSL?"
In my neck of the woods (SF Bay Area), SBC sells DSL at *up to* 1.5
Mbps for
their Express (basic) package. What speed does Qwest say you'll get
"up to"
in your area? 512Kbps or something?
Do they at least offer a minimum speed that they have to meet or you
can
cancel your contract without penalty?
Best,
