I have a B&W with 1GB of RAM. I just did the "About This Computer"

seen that before. What gives?
OS 9 does not reallocate ram upon programs quitting. To simplify things
and numbers, say you open programs in the following order with the
listed ram sizes with a gig of ram (be quiet purists, I am rounding and
simplifying things):
System 100MB
Word 75MB
Tetris 1MB
Photoshop 200MB
Quark 100MB
Free space 524MB
For a total of 476MB used and 524 as the largest unused block.
Now you quit Word and Photoshop, but leave Tetris and Quark running
Now you have
System 100MB
Free space 75MB
Tetris 1MB
Free space 200MB
Quark 100MB
Free space 524MB
So you know have 276MB used and largest unused block is still 524MB
with 275MB scattered in a couple of places.
You can open programs in the three free space areas, as long as it does
not need more than the free space available in a continuous block.
This is why in 9 it is a good idea to either occasionally restart or
shutdown your system to get the memory defragmented so you can run
larger programs.
Durn, Bruce beat me to the punch with a short answer, I hope this helps
with more explanation.
