Greetings,
The issue is really physical - a unit can boot from either master or slave.
In the cable chain, however, the master of the two on the bus *must* be
affixed to the end of the cable (sort of like the end of a SCSI chain needs
to be terminated), with the slave drive in between master and bus origin.
In an iMac I bet it would be pretty hard to snake that short cable around to
capture the  ZIP at its end.
