I used to think I knew what I was doing but after not having any computer projects for about a year I must have forgotten everything.

I put a new ATA 160 GB Seagate in a USMicroLab external combo Firewire/USB case and connected it to my iBook 10.4.2 to format. Disk Utility did not see it via firewire or USB.<<

Hook the drive up again, go into (disk utility) and format it their. You should see the drive choose the 160 in this location (Disk utility) it is in the (Applications) folder on your hard drive.<

As stated, tried that, no drive shows up or can be seen by Disk Utility. Wondering if the Seagate, out of the box, was not ready to be put in a firewire/usb case.

Nope. I just did this with a 200 GB drive in a similar case and it worked right off, didn't even need formatting (since the drives typically come formatted FAT32), though I did reformat it to HFS+, so I could put a bootable system on it.

Some older cases scavenged from CDRW's and such don't work with HDD's, but if the case is supposed to hold HDD's then that's not an issue.

It's remotely possible that the controller in the case is subject to the same 132 GB limits that older Macs are, but I doubt it if it's a new one. If this is the problem I don't know how the thing would be handled.

Does System Profiler at least show the device when it's plugged in? OOh! Is the drive set to Master? Many cases require that and the last time I bought a seagate it came jumpered to cable select.

If none of this is the case, my guess is either the drive or the case are DOA.
