Does Tiger even allow 9 to exist on the same hard drive with it?
Isn't the
HD formatted in such a way that makes the HD a hostile environment
to 9? I
am not sure, I am just asking. All I know is that I bought a 733
DA without
hard drives, and put in two new Western Digitals. When I formatted
them, I
formatted the Panther HD differently than I did the HD I put OS9
on. I think
it was HFS+ and HFS.
I think that unless you have two HDs, you can't have Tiger and OS
9 on the
same machine. Could be wrong, but this is my gut feeling.

HFS+ pre-dates OS 9, and there is no good reason not to use it, if
you are reformatting a drive. Tiger supports Classic on the same
drive or elsewhere. You just need to install the OS 9 from media
already in your possession. I understand OS 9 is not on the Tiger
DVD/CD.

David's problem is almost certainly that when he formatted the drive
to install OS X, he did NOT check the little box saying 'include OS 9
Drivers'. Hence the OS 9 installer doesn't see a disk to install to.

I'm not sure whether or not just installing the drivers via Disk
Utility from the OS 9 CD will fix the problem or exacerbate it. They
can certainly let you see the disk, they might make it so OS X can no
longer see it.

I suspect that if a hard drive is already running OS X without the OS 9 Drivers, the only way to get those drivers on there is to reformat or partition/reformat anew. If I recall David's situation correctly, he bought his used Quicksilver with OS X already there and running.

I also recall that in the early days of OS X, Apple instructed users to install OS 9 on the hard drive before installing OS X. Now it seems this is no longer necessary for the dual boot machines, given that OS X Disk Utilities gives the option to install the OS 9 Drivers.

I hope that if David follows the "roadmap" I used when I migrated my QS into Panther, things will clear up for him. I believe he has the OS 9.2 CDs. He recently noted however, that he still has the SCSI interface challenge for his old, bootable external drives.
