There is a little question of software! Take me for example, I
have perfectly good and extensive software that will run on 9.
It will not run on X "perfectly well" in Classic on X.

I know some folks agree with you. But do you know this first hand in your own case? On a few of those Sunday drives with the G4, why not try out your favorite applications under OS 9? Then if things work correctly and faster than on your 7300, give Classic a try. To get Classic to run nicely, some people recommend removing Extensions and Control Panels that you do not need. But to run "perfectly well," Classic will not support printing and maybe scanning. And your Quicksilver does not have Serial ports. So there is a hardware component to your costs too, for USB peripherals.

I suggest using a mature version of OS X, Panther 10.3.7 at least. The earlier versions of OS X, Jaguar 10.2 and earlier were not in my mind, mature and ready for the average consumer. Rather, they were still Beta releases, ok maybe Beta Plus, but still best handled by the UNIX guys.

There is
a big question of cost to upgrade to X. It is a most vexing
issue for me! And really, for me, it goes beyond money.

You may be able to buy, or be given, OS X applications in versions one or two releases older than the current ones, for less investment cost.

Excuse me, excuse me, excuse me. I will from time to time be
popping up to air my Rip Van Winkle ideas.

Wasn't this guy from New York State? Does he have a cousin somewhere down under?

You will allow me to
scream a bit as I get dragged into the 21st Century. I already
have a fancy doodle G4. But I have yet to fire it in anger for
my work. Am beginning to think this G4 is like a hobby car, I
will upgrade it and put things on it and take it for a spin
every now and again, a Sunday driver. But during the week and
for my work, I use my rusting 35 year old Ford XY...

Being in the States, I do not recognize that model.
oops, I
mean my 7300.

I hope that machine is one of the Apple Macs that never wear out.

Al Poulin
