Also try swapping in a different Firewire cable. If the dropout
re-occurs with a different cable, try different sockets on your
computer and hard drive if possible. When trying different
sockets, try one at a time and use if for a while. Once the problem
goes away, the last socket unplugged from is iffy, and you can mark
it as such. If swapping cables solves the problem, throw the old
one away.

Try pulling out the FW leads to the drives and re-inserting them.
Happens all the time to one of my FW cases.
