Turning on the computer from a USB keyboard is a non-standard thing. As long as your Apple keyboard is plugged directly into the Mac, it works great. But if you plug the KB into a hub then into the Mac it wont work, unless the Hub supports using the supplied trickle current. Also many third party KBs didn't support it. This caused enough support issues for Apple that they ended up dropping it. I miss being able to press the power key on my KB to start my PowerMac 9600. It is one of those "user experience" things that set the Mac apart from PC's.

Not at all. Turning on a Sawtooth from the keyboard works great - if you have a keyboard with an ON key of course... Never figured out why Apple dropped that from their newer keyboards.

And by the way, do you guys realize that a brand new Apple keyboard now costs only $29? I am very happy with mine

Chris, the functionality should remain with the ADB-USB adapter. In fact,
you will also have the power key, which can be used to shut down the
machine, instead of having to go to the Apple menu to shut it down.
Starting up is a different matter, since I don't think USB has the same
ability to sense the depression of the power key to turn on the machine.
Think that was lost when the Sawtooth machines came out, since they didn't
have an ADB port
