I have a LaCie (Seagate) 13gb USB external drive that I bought in 2000
or so. It has a bad sector in it so I haven't used it for a few years.
I pulled the enclosure apart today to see if I can get another drive
running in it. Right now I have a 20gb Ultra ATA formatting, but it's
taking so long I suspect it's not working right.
This is an ATA enclosure but how do I know if it will take an ultra or
serial ATA drive? I was going to buy a new drive to put in it but I am
wondering if I'm better off spending the extra cash (which I don't
really have) for a full enclosure with drive.
I also don't believe USB is bootable with the newer machines, correct?
I have a FW800 G4 running Jag and a 1.2ghz iBook running Panther.
TIA,

I believe that if you run low level format that the bad sectors will be
marked as bad and not used for data storage. Well at least that's what
should happen, even though a disk system that we had attached to a
Naked-mini system, after running the low level format just discarded
the sectors that were marked bad and made the whole disk available for
use. Well needless to say we got hold of a pretty bad disk and after
running the format utility we still had a lot of errors to the point
that the disk was unusable. Our company's engineers got hold of the
utility routines engineers and we found out that after marking the bad
sectors and storing that information that the location of the bad
sector data was not made available to the disk controller. And we had a
lot of these systems in use through the USA which solved the problem of
why some of the call data wasn't usable when it had to be pulled off of
the disk. Fortunately we also stored call data on tape and only used
disk data when the tape was full or if it went off-line. Then data was
recovered from disk.
