Since I purchased my first mac in 1987 I have never looked at any hardware
or software as an investment. Especially when you pay $150.00 for something
one day that is worth $15 the next week.

Well, a lot of us have to keep looking back, because for us there is a lot
more back than there is fore. I got my first Mac about 20 years ago, and I
have tons of data created and stored in OS-6 through 9 programs that
either don't exist in X or won't run in X, not even Classic X. People like
me who lived in pre-X for many years have a lot invested in pre-X stuff,
both data and hardware, and above all, time (watch how valuable time
becomes to you as you get older). To run pre-X programs and get at this
data and run the "legacy" hardware requires dropping back into 9
frequently. I have perfectly functional high-quality slide and flatbed
scanners and SyQuest drives and printers and such stuff that won't run in
X, or won't run with their original software, and a lot of the old 9
software controls are better than Vuescan even if the latter will run them
in X. The newer Macs that won't reboot into 9 are no good to us, or if we
buy one we'll have to keep at least one older Mac around also, just for
access to real (not Classic) OS-9 and for use as a liaison between 9 and X.
Yes, if you are pretty new, or brand new, to the Mac, by all means install
only X and never look back. But those of us with a long Mac past see X as
just a recent development in a long continuum, and we must, of necessity,
do lots of looking back, or rather running back and forth along this
continuum to maintain our long-term investment in this technology.
