I don't know if anyone here is familiar with fruity loops. Its a
program for PC only for creating music. You choose from
instruments and
pick the notes and duration of the notes. So you are essentially

program
like this for Mac OS X?
You mean like GarageBand? <http://www.apple.com/ilife/garageband/>
Naaah, never heard of it ;-)
Heh, heh.
Actually, there is lots of talent out there, and GB is being used by so
many different musicians and podcasts, from kids to professionals, it's
getting harder to say it's just for amateurs. The latest version has a
light form of music notation and can record up to 8 tracks
simultaneously. Much of the 8-track small digital studio I'm building
here in Friday Harbor is being built around it (I'll be using new
hardware recorders like the Mackie 400F or a Presonus Firepod, and
high-end mics, though).
Another inexpensive route to go is Melody Assistant:

-- which does what was described in the original post.
Between MA, GB, and my Roland SPD-S synth pad, I created a significant
addition to the intro for a well-attended public concert last spring. I
will continue using GB and MA even when I get better sofware, though,
because of their ease-of-use.
Y'all might be interested in some real low-power FM radio work, as well
as podcasts, being done with GB:
