Just to make this thread productive...

Theft is a serious problem. Apple products are big targets these days - PowerBooks, iBooks, and iPods especially! After your life has been stolen... What next? Chances of it being recovered by the police are nil.

Take a look at your home-owners insurance policy (apartment insurance, computer insurance, etc). Often for $35 to $100 per year or so you can get a Replacement Value Rider, with no or a very low deductable. That way, if your equipment is stolen, you can get it replaced easily!

A bonus: Most insurance companies will even let you "make a deal". eg: You have a two year old PowerBook stolen. So you wait until the Xmas sales and buy the latest at a reasonable price. Instead of the insurance company paying you only for what an exact replacement would have cost, because you got the higher-end machine on sale, they'll meet you half way or maybe even pay the whole thing.

And finally, a word about backups:

MAKE BACKUPS!!!!!!

Backup your data AND your hardware and software product receipts!

Make several copies.

CD-R, DVD-R, JAZ, ZIP, spare HDs ... whatever it takes!

Just do it! TODAY.

Store at least one copy OFF SITE.

Give it to your best friend, to stash in his/her sock drawer...

Someone want to add some advice about using good passwords, encrypting your most sensative data, etc - so the hardware theft doesn't turn into identity theft?

FWIW,
- Dan.
