Someone want to add some advice about using good passwords, encrypting your most sensative data, etc - so the hardware theft doesn't turn into identity theft?

Good point.

This is the province, in OS X, of FileVault, commonly named VileFault. That said, DON'T use it.

In theory, encrypting your entire home directory is a good idea, but Apple doesn't encrypt/decrypt files on the fly. Filevault turns your user directory into a single large encrypted disk image. Way too vulnerable, all it takes is a teensy bit of file corruption durng a save and BLAMMO, everything's hosed. It's an "all your eggs in one basket" thing.

You can approximate the safety, without nearly as much risk, by using Disk Utility (or Disk Copy in 10.2) and create password protected disk images to save your sensitive data.

Keychain also lets you create secure notes, to store passwords, pins, etc.

As for password security, and in general snoop-proofing your mac, I refer to the Masters of Paranoia, the NSA: <http://www.nsa.gov/snac/ downloads_macX.cfm?MenuID=scg10.3.1.1> Your tax dollars at work, and good value for the money, imo. The NSA has a long series on securing various computing systems.

I suspect you won't go so far as to open the box and clip the microphone wires to disable it 8-) but the section on using keychain is valuable, and gives good advice on the problems of maintaining hard to crack passwords without having to memorize a bazillion things like:

Just keep in mind that the NSA is more concerned with data getting into the wrong hands than data retention. Generally we're more concerned about data retention.
