Interesting, somebody from the church across the street from me, about
50-70 yards away, phoned yesterday to say they were picking up my
wireless network and it was wide open. this would translate to about
four units down on either side of me including the apartment building
on one side.

I had changed from cable to dsl a week ago and I think my protection
got messed up then. I had to enable this wireless encryption (WEP) in
the router's admin page. Then I entered a password which was
translated into a 64 bit number. Now, only wireless devices that have
this password keyed in can access the network.

To the person with only two neighbors, last year, the police in St.
Catharines, Ontario, busted a guy who was cruising neighbourhoods with
his laptop and wireless card. When he found a wireless connection, he
parked and downloaded porn through it. They found him parked outside a
home with his pants around his ankles.
I would be disgusted to think someone was using my connection for that
purpose, but now I am safely protected again.
Just my two cents.
