I thought they said Intel, and a complete transition to all their
computers running Intel by 2007.
Other than press speculation, I have not found anything specific from
Apple saying a "complete" transition to x86 or Intel by 2007. Jobs
said their "first" deal is with Intel, and at no time did he say it's
exclusive. He repeatedly said "x86", not a specific processor model.
Have you guys read up on the AMD Opterons? Very comparable to the
G5. neither has any clear superiority over the other, but Photoshop
benchmarked faster with the Opteron.
Careful about "G5". That's an Apple moniker referring to several
different Power4 and Power5 processors.
InfoWorld did a processor architecture comparison a while ago. They
like both the Opteron and Power5. They point out that the Power5 is
a faster processor with lower power consumptions, but that the
compiler optimization is lacking still.
Point being, with AMD and IBM creating such awesome processors, why has
Apple decided to go with Intel? Their processors just dont seem to compare.
Though 10 years down the road I know of some pretty insane technology Intel is
working on.
I think it's just as important to read the politics as it is to watch
the technology. IBM/Motorola/Freescale were slow to come out with
upgrades for the lower-power PowerPC line for laptops. So Apple had
to give them a BIG *poke*.
As for the future... Consider:
The (seeded) 2.50 GHz Quad Power Mac G5 benches at around 76.6
gigaflops; FCS November 2005.
But the 3.80 GHz dual Cell blade running Linux come in at 400
gigaflops, and is already shipping. :)
Now that we know that OS X is mostly processor agnostic... Such potential.
