David:
(Thinking about how I should say this so that I don't incur the wrath
of the list nanny.)
I live in a Metropolitan area of about 6,000,000. Every night on the
news one hears reports of terrible things that happen locally.
Things that you would never think would ever happen in a person's
life happen everyday to people all over the world. They even happen
to your neighbors and worst of all, they even happen to you.
Identity theft is a reality. My wife is a branch manager for a large
bank and she has told me stories that would make you think twice
about giving out the smallest bit of information.
It's really nice to pretend that everybody is nice, but they're not.
True, I have met many people in my lifetime who are truly wonderful
people. I have also met some who are very bad indeed. Currently, I
work as an RN in juvenile corrections. I've been in juvenile
corrections for about 3 years, prior to that I was working in an
adult facility. Now there is a place where you can get a true feel
for how wonderful humanity is at heart.
Just a few tips on how to live safe: anything you throw out, tear in
at least half, don't sign any credit cards, a bank will never ask you
for your personal information online, shred all banking statements.
If you're going to fill up at a gas station, never leave the card
with the cashier. Estimate about how much you'll need and charge
that amount. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true it more than
likely is.
David, I'm very happy that you live in a nice safe, protected area of
the country. I hope it stays that way. But for the rest of us who
live out in the big bad world, be careful, be safe.

It is human nature to get something for nothing if they can
get away with it. And there are just as many mass murderers and
child pornographers out in the countryside as there are in the city.
Probably more as they don't seem to get as much attention called to
themselves out in the middle of nowhere. Here in Florida, we have a
statewide database available to the public online available to
everybody...all you have to do is put in your zip code and it'll tell
you who's living in you area...I like that!
So, even though you live out in the middle of nowhere and you happen
to have broadband and somebody is 'sharing' it. Don't let them.
Protect yourself. Bad people live everywhere just like good people
do. You don't know what they're doing with your connection until the
police or sheriff shows up at your door one day. Protect yourself!
Even though that little old lady with 20 cats lives next to you
'borrows' you connection once in a while, who's to say that she's not
running a scam? The short answer is that you don't. Be wise, be
safe.
I see you are not only a philosopher but a forensic psychiatrist
and criminal statistician as well, Tim! You are so right about
the little old lady though. Of course she is running some sort
of scam...
(James Cagney was once on the run, he hid in a nunnery, they
looked after him. He kept asking what their "angle was", they
had to be running something or other, they had to have some
angle...)
