Yes, I know a clean installation is best, but my system is pretty
complicated,
and I like to preserve whatever I can. I hope I don't find too
many other
oddities.

Locate the files:
com.apple.help.plist
com.apple.helpviewer.plist
and delete them.
Then restart the platform, they will be rebuilt during the start-up
process.
And then on 10.4.3 they'll go bad again after about a week.
Help on X sucks.
