I finally upgraded my G4 DA to Tiger 4.0, then 4.3, over my old 3.9. Everything seems fine except that the Help menu item does not seem to work normally. The only way I can get any help is through the menu list, not from the Help menu of
an app.
Also, mac OS help will not display any linked items below the top page.

I tried reinstalling from the DVD but there was no improvement. Repairing
permissions didn't help either. Is there anything I can do?

Also, after installation, I only have one user, rather than the user and System
Administrator. When I try to add System
Administrator as a user, it says the name is already taken, though it doesn't diplay it in the user prefs page. Is this a Tiger thing, or did I do something wrong. How can I sign in as System Administrator as I did in all previous
versions of X?

Yes, I know a clean installation is best, but my system is pretty complicated, and I like to preserve whatever I can. I hope I don't find too many other
oddities.

Locate the files:
com.apple.help.plist
com.apple.helpviewer.plist
and delete them.

Then restart the platform, they will be rebuilt during the start-up process.

And then on 10.4.3 they'll go bad again after about a week.

Help on X sucks.

As my grandfather always said, "Don't be the first to get something NEW, and don't be the last to discard something OLD"

So I'll get "Tiger" as soon as all of the complaints slow down to a trickle.

It's the same reason that I didn't get "Panther" for more than a year after it was released. The one thing that has always impressed me about Apple though is that when they screwed up a release they have always furnished a fix free-of-charge.

Conversely is one of the biggest reasons that I abandoned MSDOS and the PC platform and one of the reasons that "Bill Gates" is so rich. When Mickymousesoft did a release and it had bugs hanging out of it everywhere they charged another $39.95 for the release that fixed the bugs. IIRC there was DOS 2.01, then $39.95 later there was DOS 2.01.1 and then $39.95 another and another and another. Well just go figure, 20 Million copy's time $39.95 again and again and again, WOW what a money maker.

Smart business man that Bill Gates, don't give anything away for free, even it it was our fault.
