Well, I solved the problem with regards to System Disk. What happened was, OS9 was unable to correctly interpret the files I had placed on the Zip disk, on another computer, while in OS X. I instead copied the files to the hard drive while in OS X, and they came up correctly in OS 9.
I also managed to solve the Startup Disk problem, with indirect help from System Disk. I got System Disk running, selected the OS X folder, clicked Save, and voila! Another complete system hang. I figured that some info common to both programs was likely corrupted, so I zapped the PRAM a few times, went back into OS 9, and voila, Startup Disk now works correctly.
