Hello All:
Is it possible that a CD that is readable by Acrobat Reader on a
Windows machine CANNOT be read by Acrobat Reader on our Macintosh
computers? By OS X Panther/Tiger Preview? I have never had this
happen to me.
I belong to a genealogical society that is producing CDs, made to
order, based on a given surname. The data comes from a well known
and highly trusted research institute. But the society folks are
not Mac-literate.
The brochure advertising the CD production capability says that the
CD runs on MS Windows 95 through XP SP2. But catch this: "NOTE:
There is no Mac edition."
Ignoramuses, or they have some 'helper' program to install things.
Should I believe this, or can I safely take a chance? The CDs are
not cheap!
Ask them if you can just read the files with Acrobat Reader. It's
highly likely that they're not merely Mac-illiterate, but computer-
illiterate as well, and have only learned to clumsily operate a few
programs on their PC's by rote. (There are a LOT of folks out there
like that, more than you would imagine.)
It may be that they don't want to support Mac users and their
mysterious and unfathomable questions.
It may be that they've jiggered some stupid PC-only software into the
mix, but I rather doubt that.
It may simply be that they have included the Windows Acrobat Reader
installer on the disk and think you have to install that to read
their PDF's.
I'd say go for it, more than likely you'll have no problems at all.
If you do I'm pretty certain there'll be SOME way to pry the
information out of the disk.
