Is there a tried and true way for Macs on 10.4 to surf completely stealth?
There is no such thing as true anonymity for any computer anywhere on
the Internet. Period.
You MUST put your public IP address in your outgoing packets if you
want the servers you're talking to to be able to respond back to you!
You can use firewall software to make sure your Mac doesn't respond
at all on certain ports. That's what they mean by "stealth". You're
there, but your Mac isn't responding to unsolicited probes.
I have noticed my cable modem IP address has always been visible to
websites and has never changed in over two years.
If you want a new public IP address, that's easy enough. Depending
on which cable system you use, there are various techniques. The
easiest is to unplug your cable modem for a while, to allow it's DHCP
lease to expire.
Every method of going anonymous or cloaking that I have looked into
seem to have holes in them.
Yup.
Think of the farmhouse sitting in the middle of a field. Just how
are you going to hide it?
Best to just make sure your doors are locked (ports are blocks) and move on...
Is paying for a good proxy server the only answer?
Let's think about that... Whoze proxy will you use?
The big off-shore ones are mostly run by intelligence agencies. Oh
yea, you know they're logged.
The pay ones -- well, you're creating a trail right there by paying!
Then you're trusting their employees to not snoop or log. ROFL.
The zombies (infected PCs)... Well, if the person knows they're
zombied they can watch and log the traffic going thru their machine!
What about Mac software solutions.
Your Linksys router is providing the basic firewall functions you
need. Turn on your Mac's built-in firewall (in OS X) if you want
more. Or add a product like IPNetSentry.
Frankly, you don't need more than what's in your router.
Is there some specific aspect of security that's worrying you?
