Yep, I have Tiger and Linksys set to do that.

I have noticed my cable modem IP address has always been visible to websites and has never changed in over two years.<<

This does not work on my modem. The IP doesn't change or expire. I have heard about cloning the MAC address to accomplish this. Anyone no if this will work?

That is to keep your ISP from messing with you, some ISPs only let you use a limited number of computers on their service (like, one). Mostly moot now, I think, but the way around it, if you had hooked up your desktop directly to the cable modem and "authorized" that MAC address (ethernet card ID) then you could "clone" the same MAC address onto your newly-installed router, the ISP would let connection occur, they would not know that you'd put a new piece of hardware in (well they can still tell but it would let you connect, without making a phone call). Nothing to do with cloaking or web security.

Is there some specific aspect of security that's worrying you?<

No just the whole lack of privacy. For example, I have gone to non- Mac websites and ads appear for Mac related products because of my previously tracked surfing and/or my OS and browser info. being made available.

that has very little to do with your IP address.

It's the whole "Big Brother" thing where my purchases, political leanings, interests, etc. don,t need to be broadcast and tracked by strangers. If something can be done to help prevent it then I'm all for taking whatever measures I need to take.

Maybe quit using Safari, Safari sucks info out of my user setup and I can't find a way to make it quit. If I am using Safari and go to certain weather sites, for example, I get matchmaker.com ads for my city. I've got all the privacy stuff in Safari set to restrict things, but unless there's a 3rd party util to tweek other settings, I've decided to assume it leaks stuff that Firefox will not. I've mostly quit using Safari just because it doesn't work as well on many sites as FireFox does, anyway. I'm sure someone will post saying Safari is the bomb, but I have looked at the prefs, and I can't get as secure-seeming or as stable a browsing experience from it as FireFox. YMMV. Maybe there's a 3rd part util to tighten it down further.

Set up Firefox, no cache, no history, no cookies, etc and you'll see less of those ads. If you want, set FireFox to ID itself as a Windows IE browser and you'll get Windows ads instead of Mac ones. Big deal.

And, if you are using excite.com, don't get worried about targeted ads, that's why excite.com and gmail and google exist-- they look at what you are typing, what browser you have, what is in your email, what you have searched for, etc and show you ads based on that. If you don't like it, use your ISP-provided email with a real email client, not a web browser. Send a friend on gmail an email including text like "george bush antichrist quote bible cause chaos" and see what type of ads he gets :) Flush your cookies and history every session, and be happy you are messing with "the man" by doing so.

BTW. When does the government iris scanning program begin?

About the same time as the brainwave pattern-matching program, I think.

Also, did you see the research done recently-- a tin foil hat actually amplifies your brain waves in frequencies that the government uses, and makes them more readily scanned.

:)

HTH. You are going to be fine. Perhaps change your browsing habits a little with regard to webmail, flush stored data, you are already using a Mac so it is at this time totally unlikely you will get spyware or adware installed, have fun, sleep at night.
