I have some old VHS tapes I would like to get on my computer, edit and
then burn to DVD. What is the best and most economical way to get them
from my VCR to my G4 Sawtooth, dual 500, 768 mb ram. I have looked at
some boxes that hook up to firewire. They are expensive though. Any
suggestions would be appreciated.

Well, the only realistic way is to have some sort of video
capture hardware. I know nothing about your G4 (my "advanced"
machine is a G3 Minitower), but if you don't have a "video-in"
port, you will need to add something, either a PCI card or
an external device. Neither are free!

I'm not looking for something free, and I am limited in PCI slots. The boxes are $400 and up. Surely there must be something out there that can hook up the VCR in an inexpensive way.
