It's not my Mac's address it is my router's ... the one seen by the internet 
world. I believe I had previously mistakenly thought it to be my cable modem IP 
address that wouldn't renew. But somehow switching to a wireless connection 
allowed my router to get a DHCP renew from my ISP whereas it has never allowed 
it before. Don't know why it made a difference since the ISP/cable modem 
shouldn't see past the router. Unless the MAC address for the wireless card 
still gets detected somehow.

I made sure it was the public IP by testing it here:

I'll further add that my status page list three information sections - LAN, 
Wireless, and Internet. The (new)IP is listed in the Internet section.
