Just to clarify... I think you've (AB) got it straight, but I just
got a messed up direct email from someone else having this type of
problem. :)
Your cable modem (same for DSL) has it's own DHCP Lease, with a
private IP address (usually in the not-publically-routed 10/8 or
172.16/12 space). That IP is only seen on the ISP's network, and is
needed for configuration, monitoring, and maintenance purposes.
Your LinkSys router (on the WAN side) has a DHCP Lease, with a public
IP address. This is assigned by the same ISP-provided DHCP Servers
that the modem used. But this IP is publically routable (seen all
over).
Your computers each have their own DHCP Leases, with private IP
addresses (usually in the 192.168/16 space) assigned by the LinkSys'
DHCP Server module.
Your computers IP is mainly used only on your house's LAN. BUT some
clients will include that address in their public transactions. A
good example of this is email.
eg: An email sent to me by my housemate included this header:
Received: from [192.168.0.17] [68.84.64.93] by cmsapps01.cms.usa.net
with ESMTP id 184JaqRGZ0360M36; Mon, 17 Jan 2005 17:32:25 GMT
Her local IP, at the time, was 192.168.0.17.
Our public IP is 68.84.64.93.
