Thanks for the advice I've gotten so far. The advice on booting from the CD is
slightly different
from what I've seen before (wait for the chime and then press C, rather than
press C before chime
ends). I'll try that and see if it works. If the old drive will work, that
would be great -
although we've faithfully backed up.

And, just to make Wayne feel better - this isn't the first place I've looked to
for advice by any
means; I wasn't aware I could find out my OS on a HD I can't access, but if
someone tells me how
to do that, I'll look; apple.com had answers, but they were insufficient; and
I'm well aware you
can't boot up without an OS - not sure how I brought anyone to *that*
conclusion!

The OS CD does seem to be clean - there was a thread on that just recently I
was reading just in
case it might be that.

Regarding hangs - I don't think we found a better way to turn the computer off
- nothing else we
tried seemed to work. But, if/when it happens again, I'll use
Command-Control-Power - I may not
be using the term "hang" correctly - I'm referring to both when you see the
mouse pointer and
can't click or use keyboard; and also when you have the clock icon. I just
know I've seen the
term often enough and it seems to apply in both situations.

I'm off to try Chuck's suggestion, and then berate websites who don't have the
info as detailed as
his.

Thanks all,

Janice
