As a lifelong Epson user, I will pitch my 2 cents in to say that none of my Epsons have ever died on me (have had 6 of them in varying degrees of price points). Get this: My Mom had an HP printer hooked up to her HP computer, and had nothing but problems with trying to get the computer to communicate with the printer.

Don't pay any attention to people who say one brand is far superior, especially when it comes to the Epson-HP debate.

It really depends on two things: how much you print, and your climate.

If you print daily or every other day, Epsons will run forever. If your climate is humid, you can go longer than that between printing. But they clog in a heartbeat in rarely-printing/dry environments.

This is true of all inkjet printers, but in most the print heads are in the cartridges; fixing them is usually a matter of resting the head on damp paper towels for a while or simply replacing them. Epson's have separate print heads, which make their cartridges cheaper, and allows them to use smaller droplet sizes, but makes the printer particularly susceptible to drying out.
