3Gigs isn't even enough for a standard install of OSX, though it's
just barely enough for a severely pruned one. ( select Customize and
delete all the language localizations and any printer drivers you
don't need)
You really need to get a bigger drive in there.
Which version of X would tax this low end system least?
I'd go with Panther, it runs quite happily on my wife's clamshell,
but I stuck a 20G drive into it.
