Hi folks...

With Christmas, I received $400 worth of gift credit at CompUSA and in
my browsing I've been drawn again and again to that Tiger box on the
shelf.

In the past, I have dismissed the thought of upgrade at the heavy cost
but now that I've got a bunch of credit there it just might be worth
it.

Every day that passes makes my 10.2.8 more and more dated and I figure
it can't be long before more and more developers drop support for it
completely. I can still get updated versions of a lot of apps that I
use (Firefox, for example) but most of Apple's modern apps now require
10.3 or above. Lots of new programs still work on 10.2.8 or better
but I'm afraid that will change soon.

So what do you guys think? Should I upgrade or not? My system was a
Beige G3 that I upgraded and is now a G4/525Mhz, 512MB RAM, Radeon
7000 video card, Pioneer DVR-110 drive and a 60gig hard drive. There
is also an Apple-branded 2gig HD on the internal SCSI bus, perhaps
this was the original drive in the system. I use that exclusively for
the OS 9/Classic installation. I also added USB support with a 2-port
USB card. Since this machine started out as a Beige, I understand I
would have to use XPostFacto to install 10.4 but this part of things
doesn't concern me.

I'm just wondering if Tiger is going to give me a boost in performance
or productivity on the hardware that I have or if I'm actually going
to take a performance hit. I've been told by numerous sources that
10.3 would be faster on my hardware than 10.2.8 is. Using this logic,
I'm assuming 10.4 is therefor also faster than 10.2.8 but I want to
hear firsthand experiences.

FWIW, I don't plan on buying a new computer anytime soon. At least
not until well after the Intel Mac systems have hit the market and and
I get a good feel of where Apple is taking the Macintosh. The G4 CPU
combined with the video card in this computer makes it simply FLY
under OS 9/Classic and it runs fairly quickly under 10.2.8. Much
faster than the original G3 CPU and not slow at all by anyone's
measurement.

So what would be my pros & cons here and what would you folks suggest?
All opinions welcome. Like I said above, the XPostFacto issue is not
a concern for me.

Thanks,
  Nat
