I just picked up an external Yamaha Firewire CRW21001X CD RW for $8 where the actual drive is trashed, but when I plug it in it shows up in System Profiler as a 400 Mb/sec Firewire device. That leads me to believe that the firewire interface is good.

Is there any way for me to find out what chipset is in this? If it had the Oxford 911 chipset, would there be an actual chip labeled Oxford 911? I did not see one on the top of the board, but I did not pull it to look at the bottom. Would the traces from the firewire ports lead straight to the chipset?

Is there anyway to determine how large of a HD this will support, or are all the quotes I see for how large a HD is supported in external enclosures only referring to the USDB part of the interface.

Thanks, and Happy New Year to all.

Len
