Excellent, thanks for the info. Hopefully the model I have coming will work just as well. I'm not too concerned about dual layer yet, but I'm sure I will be in the near future, so if there is another option other than buying toast that someone knows about, please share.
Thanks,
Brian

G'day Brian.

I've installed a SONY dual layer DVD RW DW-D26A in my G5 with Tiger, and it was seen without Patchburn.

However, it's classed as 'unsupported' as a dual layer burner.

SONY DVD RW DW-D26A:

  Firmware Revision: JYS1
  Interconnect: ATAPI
  Burn Support: Yes (Unsupported)
  Profile Path: None
  Cache: 2048 KB
  Reads DVD: Yes
  CD-Write: -R, -RW
  DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW, +R DL
  Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
  Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
  Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
  Media: No

I understand that if I want to use it as a dual layer burner I need Toast

Santa

In a few days somethign new should be arriving- a SONY DUAL LAYER DWQ30A 16X DVD Burner. I would like to use this burner with iDVD 4.0.1. IF there is a new iLife version out by macworld, I'll most likely get it, but before then I have a few DVDs to burn. Therefore, the first thing I'd like to ask about is what will I need to do to use iDVD with the new burner? I assume that since this is a third party drive, that it will not be seen as a superdrive, even when plugged in. Second, do I need to go through the whole 5-6 step process of encoding, etc etc when I burn a playable DVD? Could I simply copy the contents of a DVD I already burned to a blank DVD? Any machine I would use this on would be running the latest version of Tiger.

And what, you ask, was the beginning of it all?
And it is this......
Existence that multiplied itself
For sheer delight of being
And plunged with numberless trillions of forms
So that it might
find
itself
innumerably
