I really don't mean to be offensive here, but what difference does
any of this make? Apple made this decision and isn't going to
change it's mind.
It's a conversation. That's all. Don't create depth that isn't
there.
Discussion produces knowledge.
Knowledge is power.
So, love them or hate them they WILL be a fact.
That's right.
But what *are* "they"? Low-end laptops? iMacs? Or are high-end
Power Macs included?
THAT'S The part that drives me crazy. You have no idea. I have no
idea. None of us are Apple insiders (that I know of) and we simply
don't know. Why not just do like the rest of us and just wait and
see and then go right ahead and tear them to pieces or sing their
praises. It's the constant negative speculation that's driving me to
distraction.

The lack of information coming out of 1 Infinite Loop is a big
frustrating problem. As an insultant, I have to prepare my
clients. One cannot tell a company that's sitting at the end of
their ROI (return on investment) cycle to just ... wait. That's
how you loose customers.
Some clients (and the general hobby/home user) will be fine with
Apple's new low-end offerings. They don't care what processor is
in the box as long as it's comfortable with their web browser,
email, and word processing.
But what about the ones (that pay the big consulting fees! lol)
that need the high-end machines? Those clients care about the
performance (cpu and $) of the box!
We already know that Apple has gone Intel, which kills off a whole
level of performance offered by AMD. oops.
Inexpensive high-end AMD box running Windows or Unix or Linux.
vs
Inexpensive high-end x86 box running Windows or Linux.
vs
Expensive high-end x86 box running Mac OS X.
[yea, I know, "inexpensive" and "expensive" are relative, even
before you consider total cost of ownership issues]
If Apple fixes the threading problem in OS X, then you just have to
worry about the machine's hardware cost vs performance. Remember -
the developer tools are now behind the times.
If Apple doesn't fix it, then the Oranges to Oranges comparison
will simply knock Macs out of many markets.
If OS X is hacked to run on any x86 box, then Apple's hardware
divisions are in trouble. And since Apple really is a hardware
company... Don't be a stockholder that day.
Jobs isn't going to come out and announce "oh, we made a mistake
Oh, you never know.
Case in point 1: Mac clones. They cut into Apple sales without
really increasing the actual size of the Mac market. So Apple
reversed itself after, what, 1 year?
Case in point 2: The original iMacs were amazing machines. They
made inroads into offices that Apple never dreamed possible! Then,
instead of giving those offices sweet faster rugged machines to
upgrade to, Apple produced the cheap back-breaking eMac, the dirty-
in-10-mins fragile goose-neck iMac, and the expensive handicapped-
unfriendly iMac G5. Business response: Here we are x years later
and many of those offices have upgraded to Dell. oops.
