I need an exact algorthmic set of steps, the one I have pieced
together from various sources does not do the trick. There may be
issues about Tiger, there are hints here and there about this.
Do this on the Quicksilver running 10.4:
1) Open the Sharing pref. Pane. Enable personal file sharing on the
QS system.
2) Open the Networking pref Pane. Set the Ethernet to automatically
get an IP address. It will try for a while then self-assign an
address. Note the address, I'm pretty sure it will be
192.168.yyy.zzz. where yyy and zzz are numbers between 0 and 255.
Do this on the 7300 running 9:
3) Connect the 7300 via the crossover cable to the QS system.
4) Open the TCP/IP control panel. Set the IP address manually. Set
the IP address to 192.168.yyy.zzz+1 with the y and z numbers being
taken from the number you noted form the QS system.
(For example, if the QS has 192,168.0.1, set the 7300 to 192.168.0.2)
5) Set the network mask to 255.255.0.0 (which should be the same as
what's on the QS) You can ignore the gateway and DNS entries.
6) Open the apple talk control panel, and ensure that Appletalk is
set to the Ethernet port.
7) Open chooser, select Appleshare, and click on the server IP
address button. Enter the IP address noted above in step 2. connect,
give the proper credentials (the user name and password of the shared
account on the QS) and the drive should mount on the 7300's desktop.
If this is to be a permanent setup you probably want to get a hub or
switch (which prevents the 7300 from changing where appletalk is set
up) and get Appletalk Laserwriter Bridge, buried on Apple's web site,
which should let you run a printer-port connected printer and an
ethernet connected Appleshare network at the same time, or find an
ethernet-Appletalk hardware bridge to connect your printer to the
network.
