Command-Tab brings up the running applications very conveniently. Hold down the Command key and you can Tab (or Arrow) through all the open aps to the one you want. IIRC, this only works on Panther and beyond.

Hello. I was wondering what others are using instead
of the Dock. I just cannot seem to get used to not
being able to see what programs are active in the
finder, even though I've been using OS X since it's
beginning off and on but I got away from it till I got
a new G4 sawtooth, as it was entirely too slow in my
Beige G3 466. Despite the fairly consistent criticism,
the Dock does not appear to be going away. Some other
programs relied on the "favorites" folder which no
longer is anywhere in 10.4.
