I'm still stuck here, folks, and hoping for help.
Dan suggested (interlarded with my original questions): *snip* I just tried resending a message to folks about this email change but got an error message saying something about configuring Mail to use authentication. But I don't see anything about that in Mail's prefs; I have stuck in the various servers and passwords but maybe that's not enough? Individual messages work fine but distribution lists seem to do this. What's up there? Actually, I am in fact sending this message from the Earthlink webmail page since I cannot send anything right now using Mail, though I can receive. There's a checkbox to turn on authenticaton. Similar to #2, when someone gets an email from me from here on, will they see the Earthlink address or the accommodation address? And if they reply, will it go to the accommodation address, which is what I would like to have happen? Again, that's the point of the accommodation address, it seems to me. The message will have the From address you set. The headers will reflect where it actually came from. *snip* I don't see this checkbox, unfortunately (I'm also at the office right now rather than at home so I can't double-check). And do I set the "From" address just in Prefreences? That's won't confuse Earthlink if it's not my Earthlink address but the alumni accommodation address? Here's some more on status. 1) Mail only sends email occasionally. Here's my earlier message that includes the error messages and my attempt to fix same: *snip* Someone else mentioned I need to set up Mail to conform to Earthlink's settings, which I have gone in and verified. Based on this page: http://kb.earthlink.net/case.asp?s=st%3D53%2Ce%3D0000000000732786135%2Ck%3D6525%2Csxi%3D8&article=8973 I have done everything they say, and still I can only send email sometimes, not others. For example, I sent a test message to my parents, and it went through fine. I sent a second one to them and it didn't, giving me the authentication error message. I stuck that message in Drafts, and just tried again now after an hour or two wait, and it went fine. So, I just tried to send a distribution-list message to some people telling them about my new email, and got this error: Sending the message content to the server failed. The server response was: Your message does not conform to RFC2822 standard You can try to send using a different server. All messages will use this server until you quit or change your network settings. It also seemed to be saying I am trying to use the Comcast server (my old ISP), so I manually switched the drop-down to the EarthLink server, and got this error: Verify that you have addressed this message correctly. Check your SMTP server settings in Mail Preferences and verify any advanced settings with your system administrator. The server response was: Please configure your mail client to use authentication. You can try to send using a different server. All messages will use this server until you quit or change your network settings. This is the usual one I have gotten, although it still seems to think I want to use the Comcast server even though I told it to use the EarthLink server. The advanced pane in preferences says I am using port 110 and password authentication: "use SSL" is not checked. *snip* Suggestions on changing the port to 587 also did nothing, though I changed port 25 to 587, not port 110.) My phone call to EarthLink proved not terribly helpful, but there's more to work out there before I feel completely let down. 2) How do I set Mail so that when someone replies to a message of mine it goes to my alumni accommodation address rather than to EarthLink directly? Or does Mail not do this? 3) Since going to Panther Classic will not launch, even though I have rebuilt the desktop and repaired permissions. Sad to say I still need it at least once more. This is a biggie for me, along with email distribution lists. 4) Thinking of Classic, since I have two HDs, both with OS9 system folders on them, does it matter which one I use to run Classic (or 9)? I seem to remember something about multiple OSes on a single HD but don't know anything about it. 5) Is Earthlink's "Total Access" software necessary? I can't figure out what it does yet...but of course it's only been a couple of days. I installed it the other day, hoping it would configure Mail automatically but there has been no change in status. 6) Some have suggested I should abandon Mail for another email client. Is there received wisdom on this point? Hoping somebody knows que pasa... ******************** Bill Spencer in sometimes-frigid NH B&W G3/400mhz/rev.2/896mb/12G + 14G dual HDs/Panther!
