Further to my report of trying to install 10.2.8 on a Beige G3: I'm already running 10.2.6 (installed 10.2.4 then 10.2.6). Are there different 10.2.8 upgrades? Perhaps I'm trying to install the wrong one, but it's the only one I could find on the Apple web site.
