Greetings!

Now that is an interesting question. I have a couple machines not "os X native" in which I run OS X on a daily basis.

The first one, a B&W G3/400. It has a 40Gb HDD, and OS X resides on a 20Gb partition. Was installed without any frills. The second machine is a rev. D iMac 333. It has a 15Gb HDD and OS X resides on a 10Gb partition. Was installed without any frills.

So, I have never experienced any kind of trouble with the supposed 8Gb partition for installing OS X. Should it be it depends either on firmware revision, or on HDD brand? (I am not sure, I think the 15Gb one is a Maxtor and the 40Gb one is a Hitachi)...

The 8GB partition rule only applies to certain Macs, see the links below for which one specific. This rule doesn't apply to the B&W G3, but it _does_ apply to your Rev. D iMac 333. It still works of course now, but you can get into trouble when you have more than 8GB data on that 10GB partition. Because when the partition fills with more than 8GB of data some system files could be moved out of the first 8GB of that partition. If this happens OS X won't boot anymore, because it can't find the needed system files to boot. That's the reason why the partition has to be less than 8GB.
