Hello Richard!
Scanned through the replies to your initial posting. You describe
yourself as a neophyte, so I don't know how much sense all that tech
speak made to you.
First of all, what kind of "G3/300" do you have? There are three
different Mac models called that...:
1. Greyish box, either upright ("tower") or flat ("desktop" model)?
..or..
2. Upright box, with bright blue front, and whitish sides with big blue
Apple logo? ("Blue & White")
You don't need any Xpostfacto to use OS 10.2 (Jaguar) on either of
these, but for the grey G3s OSX must be installed on a HD smaller than
8 Gigabytes (or a partition on a bigger one, again smaller than 8
Gigabytes), assuming stock connections to the HDs (no extra ATA-cards
that is).
Unfortunately, a big HD can only be set up with several partitions at
the time of formatting (erasing) it, so if you already have a big one
with OS9 and all your files that's a lot of work (backing up
everything, formatting with first partition well under 8 Gigs,
installing OS9 and restoring all files on the bigger partition
again...)
Ok, let's assume you did all that, or have a Blue & White G3 (where
that 8 Gig restriction doesn't apply). Also I assume you have some
version of OS9 already installed.
How did you put 10.2 on your HD? The correct (only) way is: inserting
the OSX install CD and clicking on the install icon. The machine then
restarts from that CD and starts the installation. After finishing,
again it restarts, this time probably in OSX
If you did all this correctly: to switch starting up the G3 from OS9 to
OS 10.2: open the Control Panel "Startup Disk" and select the OSX
volume (or HD). I believe you need at least OS 9.1 for this control
panel to understand OSX at all. Restart. That should be all!
Oh, I forgot: is the firmware in your G3 upgraded for OSX? Check this
article, and scroll down to find your G3 model:

A 75 year old neophyte needs directions, (perhaps a URL giving detailed
instructions on how to
open OS X on my G3/300. It is on my hard drive. I
have downloaded X Post Facto, but have tried for weeks and can not open
OS X
I know you guys are really advanced in the mysteries of Mac's.
I bought the book "The Missing Manual" by Pogue and " Mac OS Xv.10.2
Jaguar Little Black Book" by Steinberg.
The books explain all the new features but don't tell me how to open.
Perhaps there is a link for dummies like myself explaining how to do
such things.
Any help would be appreciated,
Richard in San Diego
