I'm running a beige G3 desktop as a file server on my home 10 mbps
network consisting of several PC's and Mac's. The system is running
10.2.6 at 266 Mhz and has 256 mb of RAM. I use Sharepoints to assist
in serving files to both the PC's and Mac's. It accomplishes this feat
via samba for the Windows machines and afp for the OSX machines. From
the beginning I've been able to detect a noticeable 2-5 second dropout
in MP3's played on the Windows machines. The dropouts don't seem to
occur with any regular interval, but just every now and then say every
couple or three songs. The dropouts do not occur at all when I use the
Mac's to play the MP3's, which leads me to believe the problem has
something to do with samba. I also have some experience running a
Linux file server system with the same problems, but it was on a much
slower computer. I know it was possible to tweak samba on the Linux
machine, but I no idea of where to begin on an OSX machine. I looked
at all the settings for Sharepoints but could not find anything
relating to this problem. It's not the end of the world if I cannot
fix it, but it is very annoying and I would like to say that a Mac can
do what a PC can! (I had the file server setup on a 233 Mhz Windows PC
before moving it to the Mac and it worked fine for both Windows and
Mac's when I had it on that system.) I would appreciate any and all
suggestions you might have pertaining to this problem.
